System, Planet, and City of Al-zed

Al-zed, headquarters system, planet, and city of the Alliance, was originally a Zurth Colony. The city was originally known as Arazthruestra.

Origin of Name

I have to chuckle, because this is a left-over from the original story when it was Earth-based. As I thought about the story while Roger was editing it, I decided that I didn't want to pull what I called a "Gene Roddenberry" and predict a future for Earth that wouldn't come to pass. And so, most (with a few exceptions, this being one of them) ties to Earth were eliminated.

However, I liked the "sound" and "feel" of Al-zed, so the name stuck. The "original" name is a hidden reference to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and the open piece from Richard Strauss SMusic).

Al - Alpha or A, the first letter of the English alphabet
zed - zed or z, the last letter of the English alphabet
Thus, Al-zed is the first and the last, encompassing both the upper (primary) and lower (secondary) cases of the alphabet. The final word on all matters.
