Chronicles of the Alliance Book VI
Novel 6: Cleric's World
History
This was a fun "what if" story to write. From the day that I put together the original plans to expand Waken into a series of novels, this was part of the mix. One of my objectives was to bring science and faith together in a strong combination that eliminates any separation forced on them by current thinking.
Our world (at least, as the popular press likes to report it) separates religion from virtually every other aspect of life. And yet, the very basis for civilization is founded upon universal laws provided by the religious experience.
This is not to say that religion hasn't been the source of a lot of misery - it has - but when it comes to giving us our civilized nature, nothing short of religion has provided it, despite thinking that would otherwise ignore God.
The key, of course, is that no single religion is the source, but in examining the world's widest-spread religions, they all teach basically the same concepts - of being true to yourself and your neighbors - of doing to them what you want them to do to you - of dropping all pretenses of self - losing, if you will, your life, in order to find it, and serving others so as to make everyone's life a lot easier.
So, Cleric's World was written to that end - to show that science and religion could work together to accomplish a greater good and that the ultimate source of scientific knowledge isn't man (or a variant race of man) but that which gives us life itself.
The story started out being a lot less complex than it ended. While the Heuriskein problem was going to be part of it, I didn't realize how much the star spawn would play a part.
Titles
The Wounded Sky
Cleric's World
For a long time, I went with "The Wounded Sky" as the title. After writing most of the novel, very little was going to concentrate on the wounded sky problem. It seemed more appropriate to deal with the world itself, which eventually came to be known as Cleric One.
