DucKon
DucKon 17 (The Maltese DucKon) was held June 13-15, 2008. in the Naperville Holiday Inn Select, Naperville, IL 60563.
This was a fun convention to attend. It isn't overly large, but it is very family-oriented with a good, solid writer's track.
Next year's convention will have a short story contest, so watch the website for more information.
I finally got my wife convinced that she needs to put her artworks into the art shows at these conventions. She committed to do so for WindyCon, coming up in November.
This was the first convention where we helped put out the lights (in other words, we staying for just about the entire thing).
One very positive thing came from this convention and there will be more posted as time progresses: I've contracted for artwork associated with my stories. The artist is Karen Ann Hollingsworth from Glencoe (a suburb of Chicago). For samples of her work, go to http://www.wrenditions.com/
If we are fortunate enough to be able to ask for our own artwork when the books are published, I hope to have Karen do the work.
The convention produced a nice short story involving fantasy, but not set in my Star Spawn universe. A second story was suggested, again involving fantasy. The first will be crittered (http://critique.org and http://www.critters.org/), and at some point, I'll make a decision on what to do with the second.
Finally, many thanks to the wonderful Sarah Monette for taking another look at the "front end" of the first novel and making a quick suggestion, bringing me closer to having it ready for submission.
