Chronicles of the Alliance - Book III
Rebirth I
Novel 3: Matthews
History
Like the second novel in this series, I actually wrote some of it back in August of 1991. Those first few paragraphs lasted in one way or another with the Epilog showing up in Cleric's World Clerics World and then being repeated a bit in Second Encounter.
Titles and History
I started out with this being called The Eclipse Incident, but that didn't sit well. Finally, it was one of my readers who suggested I call the novel Rebirth. The more I thought about it, the more I agreed that it fit the story.
It still does, despite splitting the story into two novels (with very little modification). So now I have Rebirth I: Matthews and Rebirth II: Eclipse. Somewhere along there is the rebirth of the Drac as a race and Stollack as, well, I wouldn't want to spoil it for all those who haven't had a chance to read about this one.
Call it a coming of age story of sorts, but without any of the baggage that usually accompanies such stories.
I enjoyed writing this story, a lot. I finished it before I finished The Stormy Island Incident. There were things that happened in here that are, well, words fail me here, so I'll use the word "special" but that doesn't do it either, not when you're talking about the end of the feared Coceedn codat. Oh, but I'm getting ahead of myself. That takes place in the second half of this story, Rebirth Eclipse.
Characters
James Matthews
Rarrurker
Mardon
B’Ann, Elor – Tick-taker Boarding Steward
Ellio Barto – Floater pilot
Races
Drac
Coceedn
Xcillee
Huugar - this is the only place in the saga that this race is mentioned. It is a non-participating race associated with the Alliance and is, according the Rarrurker's thinking, "They, the logical ones, think they know all." The reference has several meanings: one, it is my tribute to Gene Roddenberry's Vulcan race of logical beings. It is also a comment on their ability to have all knowledge and draws a derisive comment from Rarrurker, a Cxillee.
