Novel 8: Second Encounter

History

When I wrote the first story in the saga - before there was a saga - I knew what was happening on the Intruder ships. As I people read the second iteration of Waken they started asked questions and that raised the possibility of more books - that there was more story to tell. The result was a series of novels, one of which was to include the Intruder side of Waken. But I didn't sit down and write the story right away. In fact, I ended up writing a number of later novels before I finally sat down to write "The Other Side of the Story."

When I did start thinking seriously about writing this story, over ten years had passed and I had forgotten much of the detail, figuring that I could always extrapolate it from the original novel.

That's fine and good, except I no longer was interested in rehashing the events of that first story, even if it would be from the Intruder point of view. I had original intended for the second encounter to be about an agreement to chase down and intercept the pirates who, it turned out, was raiding ships of both the Alliance and the Intruders.

But that wasn't nearly as interesting a story as the on-going coming of age story of the Goddess. And so, my original story plot line was set to one side and in its place I continued the story that had started with The Cleric and Clerics World.

The details of this novel are considered spoilers for those who are reading the first four books of the saga (Waken, The Stormy Island Incident, Rebirth Matthews, and Rebirth Eclipse). It is a continuation of both The Cleric and Clerics World. The Visit to a Small Planet story is mentioned only in passing, mostly because of potential permission issues.

Second Encounter

"The Other Side of the Story" didn't last very long. In fact, Pirates! became the title of choice until I actually started writing the story. At that point, I realized that this story wasn't going to be about space pirates or for that matter, spend much time dealing with the space pirate issue.

Instead, I realized this was going to be the second encounter with the Intruders, and so, that title has stuck (until someone comes along and suggests something better). I also temporarily started calling Waken, First Encounter, but I really didn't like that title, so it went back to my first choice.
