Chronicles of the Alliance Book II
Novel 2: The Stormy Island Incident
History
This was a hard novel to write and, for many readers, it may be a hard novel to read. The very first person to read a major portion of the novel came back and reported that he had a lot of trouble with the novel and had to keep telling himself, it is only a story, it is only a story.
The second problem that I ran into was one that I have since learned to accept as a valid way of writing, and that is, I know what happens and conditions at the end of the story, but I don't know how the characters will get there.
I started writing this story in early 1991, while I was working on the 3rd iteration of Waken. The first thing I managed to write was a disclaimer. Later, when one of my readers read this, she felt it was uneccessary and obvious. Here is the disclaimer that I pulled from the text:
"This story may not be an easy novel to read. While the first novel, Star Spawn, is typical of space opera, and reminiscent of the 1950’s type of science fiction, this story is somewhat different. Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster ride toward the latter portion of the book.
"Star Spawn II: The Renegade is a work of speculative fiction. While some of the ideas, theories, and dogma expressed in this work are based upon existing scientific theories and religious dogma, this story goes beyond those concepts and is truly speculative in nature. The speculation does not represent any philosophical or religious concept, theory, or dogma known to the author at the time of the story’s conception and writing. All characters are fictitious. Similarities to actual persons are coincidental."
Titles
Renegade Star Spawn
Renegade
The Engineers
The Renegade
Stormy Island Incident
The title moved around a bit as I wasn't quite sure what to call this thing.
At one time, I considered the first three (now four) books to be part of a series - the military, the engineers, and the politicians. It had its appeal, especially since I named the fourth (now fifth) book, The Cleric. Only The Cleric stuck.
Notes
While Jules Ann Stollack's fate was sealed by the nature of the story, Kristi Yates' fate was not. She was impetuous, immature, and a bit of a spoiled (well, okay, really spoiled) brat. I had enough comments from the first novel that people wondered how she became a tactician. Then there was her heart throb (though she wouldn't admit it during the course of this novel) and so, in a very bad move, she attempted to prove to herself that she still had value. The result was two people dead, including the head of project Icaridic one of her command room coworkers, and a third person permanently mutilated beyond what Drac laws would allow in rebuilding a person's body. This part of the story, concerning Kristi Yates, was not finished until after the third book was completed.
